Outrigger Hotel

While we’ve never stayed at the Outrigger Hotel, it was the scene of some of my fondest memories of the Islands.  Not to be missed is the Outrigger’s “Kani Ka Pila Grille,” a poolside bar and entertainment area dedicated to bring top-notch Hawaiian music to the listening public.  It is very similar to the Marriott at the other end of Kalakaua Avenue, in that names like Martin and Cyril Pahinui, George Kuo, Kawika Kahiapo, the group Kaukahi, Sean Naauao, can be heard on a recurring basis.  Like Martin Pahinui, George Kuo and Aaron Mahi at the Marriott, these names are among the very best in the entire world at what they do, and you owe it to yourself to go listen to them.  Someday you’ll tell your grandchildren “…let me tell you about the time I heard… sing and play in Waikiki…”

Secondly, I really developed a soft spot for the Outrigger’s “Shore Bird” bar.  It is right on the beach, and their Happy Hour $3 mai-tai’s are the best way I know of to re-hydrate after a tough day of lounging in the sun.  After numerous samplings and much research, I can attest to the “goodness” of $3 mai-tai’s on a hot day.  (But watch out…the bartenders here do not skimp on the (ahem) ingredients…please don’t even think about driving anywhere after a stint at the Shore Bird.)
