Mākaha Beach

Located waaaaaaaay to the west, in Wai’anae, Mākaha Beach takes a while to get to, but it’s worth the effort.  Situated on the island’s south shore, it is protected from the large swells that roll in from the northern Pacific Ocean and create the monster surf on the North Shore.  But that’s not to say there isn’t some great surf at Mākaha, for there is, and more than a few surfing events have been held there.  A word of caution: there have been instances of unpleasantness between locals and tourists in the western part of the island (particularly Nanikuli), so just be careful about what you’re doing and with whom.  And always lock your car (good advice for anywhere on the island, not just “out west” towards Kaena Point.)
