Lulu’s is freakin’ great!

Part of the fun of this place is that I still don’t even know its right name!  Even on their own website they are listed variably as LULUs, LuLu’s and Lu Lu’s, but it doesn’t matter—this place (not too many years ago a Denny’s) is a wonderful Waikīkī institution that should be enjoyed every day!   It is located at the farthest eastern corner of Kalakaua Avenue, right across from the park.  And “look up,” as it is on the second level, directly above Starbucks.  Their menu is varied and very reasonably priced.  Their hotcake stacks are BIG and their other servings will fill you just as well (I am 6’5″ tall and have never left hungry.) The wait staff is attentive and very good-natured.  If you see a waiter in his early ’30s who is always smiling and literally jogs around the restaurant and he does his job, ask him if he is “Shane from Maine.”  Shane has been there for at least seven years (we first met him in December 2003) and he has been there ever since.  He’s a wonderful person whose “spirit of aloha” is what Hawai’i is all about.

In closing, I am literally getting “chicken skin” as I think our many forays to Lulu’s (mostly for breakfast, but for an occasional lunch and dinner too). As you sit at counters that face outward from the restaurant on two sides (one facing Diamond Head and the other the beach), you will quickly conclude that it just doesn’t get any better than this.  There is nothing in the world like the tropics in the early morning…the beautiful colors, the ocean, the ebb and flow of the sidewalk traffic immediately below you and the exotic botanical smells that pervade the atmosphere.  I want to go back!!
