The “Kilauea Military Camp” (KMC) is one of the absolutely coolest and neatest places you can go and is a wonderful resource for military people and their families.

Located close to Hawai’i’s Kilauea volcano national park, (the only currently active volcano in the country), KMC is a Joint Services mountain resort with full-service amenities, recreation, tour packages and more. Open to all active and retired military, members of the Reserve and National Guard, active and retired Department of Defense civilian employees including Coast Guard, dependents and sponsored guests.

We’ve stayed there a number of times.  The cabins are a little rustic (they’re meant to be!), but entirely adequate for their purpose.  The KMC compound has everything you might need, to include a snack bar complete with two-lane bowling alley.

Her remarkable singing style was discovered by a radio broadcaster, who according to the story, heard Lena singing from the top of the mango tree at the Y.W.C.A on Richards Street, and offered her a singing audition. Despite early mic fright, she was an immediate sensation.

Over the next 50 years of her singing career, Lena became one of the best-known personalities in the Hawaiian music world. She was a soloist with the Royal Hawaiian Band for many years, and performed in all the major cities of the United States, Asia and the Pacific. She is much remembered for her singing of “Song of the Islands” and “Aloha ‘Oe” at Aloha Tower on Steamer Days.

During WWII, Lena’s radio show was beamed around the world to American troops, and she traveled to many military bases to entertain. In addition to recording on several major record labels, Lena was asked to head the Hawai`i Pavilion at the San Francisco World’s Fair in 1939 and 1940, and was voted the most popular entertainer at the Fair.

Lena’s singing trademark, carried on today by many well-known singers of Lena’s songs, was a vocal leap done with a break in the voice. Many of her own compositions such as “E Ku`u Baby”, “Holo Wa`apa”, “Ei Nei,” were tailor-made for her unique vocal style which included holding a note until the audience was sure she was out of breath, and then singing the last phrase without breathing.

Characteristic of her aloha spirit, Machado devoted time in her later years to teaching Hawaiian songs and hula. Her legacy is the “Haku Mele Award”, a scholarship given to a Kamehameha Schools senior who excels in composition.

The melody of the chorus is also remarkably close to the chorus of George Frederick Root’s composition, “There’s Music In The Air”, published in 1854. There is a manuscript of “Aloha Oe” in Queen Lili’uokalani’s handwriting in the Bishop Museum.

It is the largest zoo within a radius of 2,300 miles and unique in that it is the only zoo in the United States originating from a King’s grant of royal lands to the people. King David Kalakaua, Monarch of Hawai`i from 1874 to 1891, made lands of the Leahi Land Holdings available in 1876 to the people for a thirty year lease. That year, a “Kapiolani Park Association” of two hundred subscriber members assumed the administration of the three hundred-acre park. The marshy parcel was a muddle of fishponds, lagoons and islands where King Kalakaua maintained his collection of exotic birds. In 1877 the area was named after the King’s wife and opened as Queen Kapiolani Park.

    Park Association members supported the unpromising park with the help of royal grants through 1894. In those days, the park’s primary attractions were the exotic bird collection and horse racing, especially the running of the Rosita Cup, held annually on King Kamehameha Day.

    Peacocks, trees, and palms were added to the park, with plantings obtained from Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Roads and trolley lines were extended to include “Waikiki Road at Makee”, today’s intersection of Kalakaua and Kapahulu Avenues. The park was permanently established in 1896 and the City and County of Honolulu assumed administration of city parks in 1914. Today, the zoo continues under the administration of the City, but as a part of the Department of Enterprise Services.

    “Everything seems to grow well in Hawai’i– flowers, lush rainforests, towering trees and ferns, exotic plants brought from all over the tropics.”  I couldn’t have said it better myself!  Hawai’i’s climate is so good and the land is so verdant that I think even I could grow plants in Hawai’i!  If you are interested in plant life, Hawai’i has several superb botanical gardens that will thrill those with a green thumb.  Most are rather extensive, so plan on taking the time to do them right.  I think a half day would be an appropriate length of time for each of these gardens…who knows; you might even stay for longer!

    When I was on active duty I got in 11 parachute jumps.  All were static line and all were from Navy, Marine or Air Force aircraft.  And I can’t say it wasn’t exciting, even when I was a “young and dumb” 23 years old, for exciting it was.  If you’re ever stuck in the hotel on a slow Sunday afternoon, this might be the way to break the boredom (on the other hand, if youre bored in Hzawai’i, then shame on you to begin with!)  But hey, how dangerous can it be?  Pres. Bush I did it on his umpteenth birthday, so if he can, you can too!

    If you love the water (hey, remember, you’re in Hawai’i, you have to love the water!), and you love beautiful beaches, and you like the idea of learning how to surf (who hasn’t fantasized about surfing like Duke Kahanamoku??) AND you’re on Maui, then maybe it’s time to boogie on down to a surfing school and learn how to do it right.  Personally, I tried surfing a couple of times in the early 1970s, but I wasn’t able to pick it up.  The boards were 10-12 ft long at the time, very heavy, and I just wasn’t able to “crack the code” on how to do this thing called surfing.  But fo you younger types, I suggest you hurry on over to nearest surf school and dive on into it.  It really, really looks like fun!

    The first issue we’ll address is one that is absolutely critical to the survival of any state or nation: the quality of its education.

    Public education in Hawai’i has been poor ever since I’ve been reading about it, and that is for about forty years. Annual testing scores continue to be poor and little ever seems to be done to fix it. I’m sure there are a lot of reasons for this, but let’s take a look at this from a dispassionate perspective, if that is possible.

    As a way to promote a possible ‘fix’ for this problem, three former governors of Hawai’i were asked to study the subject and produce a report regarding it. Here is what they came up with:

    Report.

    For years, Hawai’i has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on public education with the following results:

    § Median scores on national exams are close to being the lowest in country

    § Business and military leaders say the poor school system makes it difficult to attract good people to the Islands

    § Labor unions say public school grads often score poorly on apprentice examinations

    § The University of Hawai’i system reports that many students are ill-prepared to take courses at even the community or junior-college level

    § Many companies say that even high school graduate are not prepared for entry level jobs

    The current system is controlled by the state’s Board of Education, the state Legislature and the governor.

    Recommendations

    § Make the governor responsible for state education; replace the Board of Education with a board appointed by the governor.

    § Empower Principals. Give them the power and authority they need to run their schools, then hold them accountable. Most importantly, give them the power to hire and fire poorly performing teachers. Give them also control of their budgets by taking it away from centralized bureaucracies.

    § Increase Classroom Time for Students.

    Some myths regarding the Hawaiian public education system (as stated by the three governors. The comments dispelling the myths are also from the governors):

    § There are too many children from below-the-poverty-line families. (In fact, Hawai’i has fewer such children than the national average

    § Too many “special ed” children command an unduly large part of the budget. (Hawai’i has fewer such students than the national average.)

    § Many people blame intransigent unions for the current state of the system. While yes, unions have blocked many reforms, many states with successful school systems have unionized teachers.

    § Hawai’i has too many children with poor English-speaking skills. Young people with limited English proficiency are a significantly smaller portion of the population than many other states.

    § There isn’t enough money being spent on education. In fact, Hawai’i is 13th of the 50 states in spending-per-student. The amount of money Hawai’i spends on each student per year ($16,000) far exceeds the tuition at most private schools.

    § Private schools pick too many of the bright students out of the public system. This is not consistent with data from other states.

    The governors conclude with “Our recommendations are the foundation for a transformation of Hawai’i’s public schools, but we recognize that more is needed. Emphasizing student growth and achievement will require restructuring the education bureaucracy, ensuring that more resources make their way to the classroom…

The setting is spectacular and the food is great too!]]> Don’t let the name fool you!  When I heard we were going to “Mama’s Fish House” I wasn’t quite sure what we were getting into, but it was great!  “Mama’s” is right on the beach, just to the east of Paia, on the north shore.  The restaurant proper is striking, with an upscale, tropical elegance that you will like.  (Which is beautifully reflected in their website, one of the most attractive we’ve come across in this project), The design is the wide open “plantation style” (large, open rooms open to the outside as well) that I have come to love so much.  The food is wonderful, though a little on the pricey side. But hey, you’re on vacation, on Maui, so throw caution to the wind make a visit to “Mama’s Fish House”; you’ll  be glad you did.  A great venue for that “special occasion!”

    Located between Fort DeRussy and the Hilton Hawaiian Village on the west end of Waikiki, the Hale Koa has been serving military personnel and their dependents for almost 40 years.  Believe it or not, I have never stayed there, but have walked through many times.  It is a first-rate hotel and you certainly can’t beat the location.  They have every kind of facility you might want, including a well-stocked exchange.

    My only advice regarding the Hale Koa is call early for reservations! I’ve tried to get reservations 2-3 mos. prior to my intended visit dates and have been shut out every time (you’d think I’d learn!).  Calling as much as 12 mos. ahead is not unheard of and may be what’s required with them.  But on the bright side, if they’re booked that far in advance, they must be a good outfit!

    It’s always fun to dive, snorkel or free-swim in Hawaiian waters, and it’s tough to beat a trip to Molokini for these purposes.  Warm, clear water and professional boat crews make these outings most enjoyable for those who enjoy diving, snorkeling and using snuba.

I have also heard that the word is a derivative of “Hispaniola,” a descriptive word applied by Hawaiians to Mexicans (Hispanics) that came to the islands.  (The Hawaiian language has no “s” sound, and all syllables and words must end in a vowel.) Paniolo, like cowboys on the mainland of North America, learned their skills from Mexican vaqueros.

    By the early 1800s, Capt. George Vancouver’s gift of cattle to Pai`ea Kamehameha, monarch of the Hawaiian Kingdom, had multiplied astonishingly, and were wreaking havoc throughout the countryside. About 1812, John Parker, a sailor who had jumped ship and settled in the islands, received permission from Kamehameha to capture the wild cattle and develop a beef industry.

    The Hawaiian style of ranching originally included capturing wild cattle by driving them into pits dug in the forest floor. Once tamed somewhat by hunger and thirst, they were hauled out up a steep ramp, and tied by their horns to the horns of a tame, older steer (or ox) that knew where the paddock with food and water was located. The industry grew slowly under the reign of Kamehameha’s son Liholiho (Kamehameha II).

    Later, Liholiho’s brother, Kauikeaouli (Kamehameha III), visited California, then still a part of Mexico. He was impressed with the skill of the Mexican vaqueros, and invited several to Hawai`i in 1832 to teach the Hawaiian people how to work cattle.  The Mexicans came to Hawai’i, showed the Hawaiians how to manage cattle ranches, then in time returned to Mexico and California.

    There is another very interesting spin-off from this story, and that is the story of how the Mexican cowboys and paniolos were involved in the evolution of Hawaiian “slack key guitar,” known as ” Kī hō’alu ” in Hawaiian.  Kī hō’alu is one of the most beautiful genres of music you will ever hear…so beautiful, in fact, that I am doing research on the subject in hope someday of writing a book about it.  If you want to hear the best “slack key” guitar in the world, just do a Google or Youtube search for Led Kaapana, Gabby Pahinui, Sonny Chillingworth, Cyril Pahinui (if you can find Cyril’s instrumental rendition of “Makee ‘Ailana”, you will be listening to perhaps the most beautiful guitar solo ever recorded), Martin Pahinui or George Kuo.  These artists are the best in the world at what they do, and they merit your closest attention and respect.

    One version of the origin of slack key guitar has it that when the vaqueros came to Hawai’i they of course brought their guitars with them.  Then, over the years and around a thousand different camp fires, the vaqueros showed the Hawaiians how to tune and play the guitar.  When the vaqueros returned to California, they left their guitars behind and the Hawaiians, over many years, developed their own tunings for them.  No one can argue that the results were not, are not absolutely striking.  It is magnificent music.

    Even today, traditional paniolo dress, as well as certain styles of Hawaiian formal attire, reflect the Spanish heritage of the vaquero. The traditional Hawaiian saddle, the noho lio, and many other tools of the cowboy’s trade have a distinctly Mexican/Spanish look and many Hawaiian ranching families still carry the names of the vaqueros who married Hawaiian women and made Hawai`i their home.

Modern Hawaiian history began in the mid-1700s. King Kamehameha I, king of Hawaii’s “Big Island,” invaded Maui in 1790 and fought the inconclusive Battle of Kepaniwai, but returned to Hawaii to battle a rival, finally subduing Maui a few years later.

    On November 26, 1778, explorer Captain James Cook became the first European to see Maui. Cook never set foot on the island because he was unable to find a suitable landing. The first European to visit Maui was the French admiral Jean-François de La Pérouse, who landed on the shores of what is now known as La Perouse Bay on May 29, 1786. More Europeans followed: traders, whalers, loggers (e.g., of sandalwood) and missionaries. The latter began to arrive from New England in 1823, settling in Lahaina, which at that time was the capital. They clothed the natives, banned them from dancing hula, and greatly altered the culture.  The missionaries taught reading and writing, created the 12-letter Hawaiian alphabet, started a printing press in Lahaina, and began writing the island’s history, which until then was transmitted orally.  Ironically, the missionaries both altered and preserved the native culture. The religious work altered the culture while the literacy efforts preserved native history and language. Missionaries started the first school in Lahaina, which still exists today: Lahainaluna Mission School, which opened in 1831.

    At the height of the whaling era (1843–1860), Lahaina was a major whaling center with anchorage in Lāhainā Roads; in one season over 400 ships visited Lahaina with 100 berthed at one time. Ships tended to stay for weeks rather than days, which explains the drinking and prostitution in the town at that time, against which the missionaries vainly battled. Whaling declined steeply at the end of the 19th century as petroleum replaced whale oil.

    Kamehameha’s descendants reigned until 1872. They were followed by rulers from another ancient family of chiefs, including Queen Liliuokalani who ruled in 1893 when the monarchy was overthrown. One year later, the Republic of Hawaii was founded. The island was annexed by the United States in 1898 and made a territory in 1900. Hawaii became the 50th U.S. state in 1959.

    In 1937, Vibora Luviminda trades union conducted the last labor strike of an ethnic nature in the Hawaiian Islands against four Maui sugarcane plantations, demanding higher wages and the dismissal of five foremen. Manuel Fagel and nine other strike leaders were arrested, and charged with kidnapping a worker. Fagel spent four months in jail while the strike continued. Eventually, Vibora Luviminda made its point and the workers won a 15% increase in wages after 85 days on strike, but there was no written contract signed.

    Maui was centrally involved in the Pacific Theater of World War II as a staging center, training base, and for rest and relaxation. At the peak in 1943-44, more than 100,000 soldiers were there. The main base of the 4th Marine Division was in Haiku. Beaches (e.g., in Kīhei) were used to practice landings and train in marine demolition and sabotage.

    Let me recommend a B&B that we have stayed at in Hilo, and liked very much—the Orchid Tree B & B, run by Steve and Su Welsh.  We stayed with them for 5 days in December 2009 and it was wonderful.  They have two rooms adjoining the main house that are beautifully decorated.  And hang on for the breakfast that Steve serves…it’s incredible!  Steve has a coi pond in his back yard, and when he feeds them, the fish actually come to have Steve “scratch their ears” (well, I’m not sure fish have those kinds of ears, but the effect is the same!)  The picture above actually show Steve  “scratching” the fishes’ ears! Another benefit of our stay with them:  we met a wonderful “Aussie” couple, Barrie and Tracey, from Fremantle.  We all met again in Honolulu the next week and palled around together.  And THEN, just a week ago (now June, 2010), they came through Washington, DC and stayed with us for a long weekend!  This is the kind of great people you meet at the Orchid Tree !!  When you call Steve, tell him I sent ya!

    Another of the slack key “big three,” Sonny Chillingworth started playing guitar at the age of 12 when he lived on Moloka’i. Family legend has it that one day his father brought an old recod player and some records to the house. One of the records was Gabby Pahinui’s Hi’ilawe, and the rest, as they say, is history. Three years later he visited Honolulu and his mom arranged for him to meet Gabby. Sonny learned his lessons well and after high school moved to Honolulu to play with Gabby, at clubs, lu’aus and all-night jam sessions.

    Sonny made his first recording in 1954, of Makee ‘Ailana, (one of my all –time favorite songs.) Ten years later he released his first album. Waimea Cowboy, which sold spectacularly.

    As part of the “Hawaiian Renaissance” of the 1970s, Sonny began to share his knowledge with younger performers. Such notable players as George Kuo, Ozzie Kotani and Makana studied under Sonny, and the world is so much richer for their having done so.

    Leonard Kwan was born in 1931 andi is credited with making the first LP recordings of slack key instrumentals. He also helped authour a slack key instruction book and composed a mumber of guitar pieces that have remained popular for many, many years.

    Born on O’ahu, Leonard studied music in high school and learned to play slack key guitar from various members of his family. He made his first record at the age of 26, called Hawaiian Chimes. He caught the eye of one Margaret Williams, of Tradewinds Records, who actually recorded him in her house. The result was a hit called “‘Opihi Moemoe,” which would become “his song” and a standard throughout the profession.

    Kwan was also famous for sharing his musical knowledge with others. For many years, slack key tunings were closely held secrets of the artists and it wasn’t until the 1960s and ’70s that artists started to share freely their tunings with others. He published a collection of his own tunings in 1975.

    At about age 50, poor health forced Leonard to start slowing down and he stopped his active schedule of performances. But before he passed away he was persuaded to make a number of recordings, essentlally for the sake of history and posterity, to help keep this beautiful form of music before the public.

    As a youngster, he quickly mastered the steel guitar, never having learned how to read music. As was the case with so many musicians at the time, Gabby played frequently in bars, it is here that some say Gabby developed his drinking habits that were to dog him for the rest of his life.

    Though an absolute master of the steel guitar, Gabby is best remembered for his singing and his playing ki ho ‘alu, or Hawaiian slack key guitar. He learned from the best at the time, Herman Keawe, who Gabby once described as being the best slack key player of all time.

    In 1938 Gabby married his sweetheart Emily and started a family that would grown to four daughters and six sons.

    Gabby cut his first record, “Hi’ ‘ilawe” n 1947, for Bell Records. Some say this is the first recording ever made of Hawaiian slack key guitar. The following year came “Hula Medley,” the first record of a slack-key guitar instrumental. During this period he made two other influential sides for Bell, the vocal “Wai O Ke Aniani” and the instrumental “Key Koalu” (a misspelling of “Kī Hō`alu,” the Hawaiian term for “slack key”), plus another version of “Hi`ilawe” for Aloha Records.

    Gabby played with many of the great bands and musicians of his time. He also appeared on “Hawai’i Calls,” a popular international radio show that began in the 1930s. Eventually, Gabby moved Emily and the children to Waimanalo, which had become a popular second home location for many musicians. The all-weekend jam sessions at the Pahinui home were legendary.

    In 1972 Gabby made four albums with what later came to be called the “Gabby Band,” The first album featured him backed by no less than four of his sons. Gabby was a major force in what would be come to be known as the “Hawaiian Renaissance,” a renewal of interest in all things Hawaiian that began in the 1970s (and continues to this day.)

    Sadly, as Gabby began to enjoy greater success in the 1970s, an accident at work and his lifelong drinking left him in ever-poorer health. He left his road crew job and took a job teaching in the city and county cultural programs. He died in 1980, at age 59.

As one who has done four marathon...]]> As long as we’re on the subject of running, I simply must tell you of the “Run to the Sun,” an annual running race held on Maui. Most of us know that the marathon distance is 26.2 miles; now imagine a foot race that is 10 miles longer, and takes the runners from sea level to ten thousand feet over the course of the race!

    Such is Maui’s “Run to the Sun.” As one who has done four marathons in his life (all of them the Honolulu marathon), I can “get my arms around” the marathon distance, but I cannot, for the life of me, comprehend running up a mountain that is over 10,000 feet high. The race starts in Kahului, proceeds along the flat, central part of the island, then starts the ascent of Haleakala at about the 15 mile mark. So that makes it even worse: 10,000 of vertical rise in the remaining 21+ miles, or an average of 470 of vertical rise for every one of those 21+ miles. This is as close to “unbelievable” as I’ve ever come when trying to conceive of an athletic event. And the real kick in the teeth is that, as I understand it, competitors don’t even get their finisher’s T-shirt unless they finish in 9 hours or less!  Talk about a long, tough day!
